CYP6034 - Dissertation

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Demonstrate the ability to design a project having regard to principles of good research design and ethics;
2 Demonstrate the ability to collect and analyse information and arrive at conclusions on the basis of systematic and sustained argument;
3 Demonstrate the ability to assess and evaluate critically a variety of types of evidence;
4 Write a dissertation in an appropriate style.

Content:

The module provides an opportunity for students to complete an independent investigation into an area of interest. It will entail application of the principles and practices introduced in the Research Methods module at Level 5. Identification of an area of inquiry will lead to a practical investigation or a theoretical study. A selected, extensive, literature review will inform the investigation. Evidence will be gathered with due regard to ethical concerns, where appropriate. The dissertation will comprise an account of the substantive literature, methods used and discussion of findings.

The dissertation involves largely independent study and research. Supervision will be provided following initial briefings.
