The module commences by exploring the social construction of youth offending and related development of the youth justice system in the United Kingdom. The legal context and the way that the range of organisations that work with young offenders plan and organise their work will be explored, with a particular focus on the Youth Justice Board, Youth Offending Teams, the Youth Court and the ‘secture estate’. Different ways of responding to youth offenders will be outlined and analysed – including custodial and non-custodial disposals. The module will draw on recent research findings to understand and develop theoretical approaches. The importance of multi-professional working and ‘joined up’ thinking will be assessed.
