This course will extend students’ understanding and appropriate use of the English language, both oral and written, in the context of studying for a business degree. The course will pay particular attention to further developing students’ academic writing skills. It will also extend students’ understanding of aspects of British culture, focussing on topics specifically relevant to a business degree programme, e.g. Introduction to the British Legal system, Politics in the UK, the British Economy and the National Health Service. Study of specific business concepts and relevant vocabulary to students’ semester 2 business programme will also be a key part of this module and students will have the opportunity to study and practise professional presentation skills.
An appropriate range of materials will be used from a variety of sources including authentic material eg from newspapers, websites, the BBC as well as commercially available English language text and resource books.

Additional Assessment information
Students are required to submit a minimum of 5 written assignments set by the tutor as homework on a weekly basis. They then improve their first version based on tutor feedback and re-submit both the originals and the re-writes in the final portfolio. The portfolio also includes a selection of evidence of independent study activities and a log recording self-directed learning tasks. The presentation will be on a topic of the student’s choice but will involve a comparison between an aspect of the student’s life and culture and that of the UK. An overall pass mark is required for this module for progression to Level 5.
