SHN6203 - Interventions and S&C in Rehabilitation

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

This module develops from the principles of rehabilitation introduced at Level 5. You will investigate how concepts of strength and conditioning influence rehabilitation and are used to safely return the athlete to sport / activity. You will learn how to work with patients in an individual and group rehabilitation setting, developing on the ideas of inclusive, evidenced based rehabilitation introduced in Sports Injury Rehabilitation.

Along-side this you will study and discuss the implantation of common nutritional strategies used in the support and rehabilitation of athletes.

Further details relating to assessment
Assessment 001 - Design a return-to-play programme for a sport performer. In doing so students will prepare a sample of an individual AND group session. Students will be required to present one of these sessions in their final practical exam at the end of the semester. The return-to-play programme should consider the sport specific demands in terms of physiology, psychology, nutrition and conditioning.

Assessment 002 – Students will present their return to play session for either the individual athlete or a group training session. The type of session will be allocated at random on the day of the exam. Students will be required to provide a session plan and undergo a short viva at the end of the session.

Formative Assessment - This will be ongoing throughout the module and include tutor and peer feedback and discussions. There will also be an opportunity for formative feedback on Assessment 001 prior to the hand in date and assessment unpacking preparation for Assessment 002 prior to the submission date.

Assessment 003: There is an 80% attendance requirement for this module, which aligns with the expectations of The Society of Sports Therapists (SST). Your attendance will be used to determine whether you will be permitted to attempt the practical assessment (002), and thus could have implications for whether you can pass the module. Detailed below are the potential scenarios:
• 80-100% attendance (inclusive); You will be permitted to attempt the practical assessments (002).
• 50-79% attendance (inclusive); You may not be permitted to attempt the practical assessment (002) in the first attempt assessment window and you will be given a grade of 0 (Non-Submission). You will only be permitted to attempt the practical assessment (002) in the second attempt assessment window if you attend mandatory catch-up sessions.
• 0-49% attendance (inclusive); You will not be permitted to attempt the practical assessment (002) in the first attempt assessment window and you will be given a grade of 0 (Non-Submission). Furthermore, it will not be possible to raise your attendance to a sufficient amount with catch-up sessions, therefore you will not be permitted to attempt the practical assessment (002) in the second attempt assessment window and you will be given a grade of 0 (Non-Submission). This will mean you will not pass the assessment (002) and will not pass the module.

Assessments 002 and 003 must be passed as part of PSRB requirements. Students must be able to demonstrate safe and effective practice.
