1 - Apply sport & exercise psychology concepts, theory, and good practice within a range of applied sport & exercise science settings;
2 - Analyse the part sport & exercise psychology plays in the work of a sport or exercise support team and how the application of sport & exercise psychology can enhance roles within this team;
3 - Showcase how sport & exercise psychology and a sport & exercisepsychologist’s services can be effectively promoted to various stakeholder groups;
4 - Illustrate how contemporary behaviour change theories can be effectively utilised to guide and support interventions in sport and exercise settings; and,
5 - Communicate evidence-based and ethical sport & exercise psychology knowledge and applications in a clear and concise manner, accessible to a range of stakeholders.

Content:

Building on your experiences at Level 4, this module enables you to further develop your understanding of key sport & exercise psychology knowledge and apply this within a range of sport & exercise settings. Focusing on evidence-based and ethical good practice, you will consider how a variety of roles in sport and exercise (i.e., people who support sport performers and exercisers, such as coaches) can use sport and exercise psychology to support and enhance their work. The emphasis will be on translating contemporary research into usable and impactful intervention plans which promote mental health, wellbeing and performance outcomes, that are communicated in ways that are accessible to a range of stakeholders.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Seminars and workshops contain interactive tasks with a focus on case studies and problem-based learning. Workshops also support learning through discussion, supported further with online forums, quizzes and reading activities. Panopto videos will emphasise core areas of the module curriculum, indeed the module will introduce theoretical content via blended delivery in the form of directed videos or reading. Each teaching week will introduce you to a new topic area which will be informed by theoretical and research knowledge. You are encouraged to consider the application of the content to addressing a sport and exercise psychology problem, for example, working with a range of clients and associated stakeholders in sport and/or exercise settings. You will consider the sport & exercise psychology issues from a variety of roles in the sector – such as coaches, trainers and other support staff.

Further Details Relating to Assessment

Seminars and Workshops contain taught content and interactive tasks with a focus on case studies and problem-based learning. Workshops also support your learning through assessment-focussed discussion, supported further with online forums, quizzes and reading activities. There will be opportunities for formative assessment ahead of assessment 1 (mid-semester) and assessment 2 (end of semester) via in-class activities, online moodle forums and optional individual/group tutorials. Panopto videos will also emphasise core areas of the module curriculum and assessment. Pre, Post and Live materials will include assessment support activities.

001: The individual presentation will require you to develop and deliver a presentation which addresses the importance of applying behaviour change principles with a hypothetical case study client. Students are tasked with developing a hypothetical intervention plan for the case study client within a sport and/or exercise context, considering the role of different practitioners in the implementation of such interventions, utilising sport and/or exercise psychology concepts and principles.

002: The negotiated assessment will require you to consider how sport and/or exercise psychology can be promoted to and utilised by various audiences or groups within sport and exercise science contexts (such as, coaches, personal/health trainers, parents or athletes etc.). Upon doing so, assessment groups will be given the opportunity to explore different approaches and formatting options such as: an educational workshop, a podcast series, a series of infographics, web article etc.

Peer-adjustment will also be utilised within the group negotiated assessment. For each assessment a categorical mark will initially be awarded to a group assessment by the tutor. This mark may then be adjusted (to a categorical individual mark) if a given student is deemed to have contributed more or less than the group average by their peer group.

Students are signposted to the module handbook for full details of both assessments.
