SHN5195 - Working with Special Populations

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 - Discuss the prevalence of special population groups and the effects of their conditions on the body; and
2 - Evaluate the applicability of different physical training methodologies for differing special population groups.

Content:

This module focuses on understanding and addressing the unique needs of special population groups, such as individuals with chronic conditions or disabilities. You will explore the prevalence of various conditions and their impact on the body, examining how these may affect physical health, movement, and rehabilitation. The module also covers the evaluation of different physical training methodologies, assessing their applicability to these populations. You will learn how to design safe, effective exercise programs tailored to specific health conditions, ensuring that interventions are both appropriate and beneficial for enhancing overall well-being and functionality in special populations.

Learning and Teaching Information:

This module adopts a blended learning approach, combining interactive seminars and practical sessions in the sports therapy and rehabilitation environment to develop your theoretical understanding and practical competencies. The seminars will allow whole group contribution to include multiple viewpoints and perspectives. The practical sessions will be smaller groups where you will be encouraged to work with a range of your peers. They will include simulations to develop your ability to deliver physical training methodologies to a range of special population groups. There will also be guided independent study where you will consolidate your in-session learning.

Further Details Relating to Assessment

001 – Coursework (Information Resource)

This assessment requires you to demonstrate your understanding of special population groups and the effects of their conditions on the body. You will be required to produce an information resource that includes the prevalence of the group(s), the physiological and functional impact of their condition(s), and the implications for sports therapy practice. Additionally, you will evaluate the applicability of various physical training methodologies for the group(s), discussing the benefits, limitations, and considerations for adapting exercise programs to meet their unique needs. The information resources should be evidence-based and include practical recommendations for designing safe and effective interventions.
