On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1 - Identify and explain the information gathered in a subjective assessment.
2 - Explain the benefits of soft tissue manual therapy techniques.
3 - Demonstrate soft tissue manual therapy techniques for non-pathological and pathological tissue.
4 - Reflect on your development throughout the work placement or professional challenge.
Subjective assessments form the initial stages of working with any client and being able to efficiently take accurate notes is an important skill for treatment continuity. There is also a demand for soft tissue manual therapy techniques in the general public and athletes for reasons such as alleviation of symptoms and restoration of optimum function. These goals are essential in promoting quality of every-day life in both athletes and non-athletes. This module will provide you with both a theoretical and applied understanding of soft tissue manual therapy techniques.
This module also incorporates the Level 4 work placement or professional challenge element of your study.
This module adopts a blended learning approach, combining interactive seminars and practical sessions in the sports therapy and rehabilitation environment to develop your theoretical understanding and practical competencies. The seminars will allow whole group contribution to include multiple viewpoints and perspectives. The practical sessions will be smaller groups where you will be encouraged to work with a range of your peers. They will include simulations to develop your ability to conduct subjective assessments and apply soft tissue manual therapy techniques. There will also be guided independent study where you will consolidate your in-session learning.

Further Details Relating to Assessment
001 – Practical (Presentation)
This assessment must be passed (40%) for the module to be passed.
This assessment will require you to provide an overview of a subjective client assessment, identifying the key information that should be gathered from a client and explaining the value of the information. In addition, you should explain the benefits of soft tissue manual therapy techniques.
002 – Attendance
There is an 80% attendance requirement for this module, which aligns with the expectations of The Society of Sports Therapists (SST). Your attendance will be used to determine whether you will be permitted to attempt the practical assessment (003), and thus could have implications for whether you can pass the module. Detailed below are the potential scenarios.
80-100% attendance (inclusive); You will be permitted to attempt the practical assessments (003).
50-79% attendance (inclusive); You may not be permitted to attempt the practical assessment (003) in the first attempt assessment window and you will be given a grade of 0 (Non-Submission). You will only be permitted to attempt the practical assessment (003) in the second attempt assessment window if you attend mandatory catch-up sessions.
0-49% attendance (inclusive); You will not be permitted to attempt the practical assessment (003) in the first attempt assessment window and you will be given a grade of 0 (Non-Submission). Furthermore, it will not be possible to raise your attendance to a sufficient amount with catch-up sessions, therefore you will not be permitted to attempt the practical assessment (003) in the second attempt assessment window and you will be given a grade of 0 (Non-Submission). This will mean you will not pass the assessment (003) and will not pass the module.
003 – Practical (Soft Tissue Manual Therapy)
This assessment must be passed (40%) for the module to be passed. Additionally, if you are unsafe at any point in this assessment then the maximum mark you can achieve is 35%.
This assessment will require you to demonstrate soft tissue manual therapy techniques for two scenarios; one of non-pathological tissue and one of pathological tissue. In addition, you must justify your decisions about the techniques you chose to apply to the scenarios.
004 – Work Placement / Professional Challenge
This module will culminate in a two-week Professional Challenge Project or a two- week work placement. You will have the chance to opt for which option you want to take during the course of the module. Guidance regarding the options will be included in the Module Handbook and supported by briefings through the module.
A pass in the Professional Challenge Project will be achieved through participation in key tasks throughout the project. A pass in the work placement will be based on employer feedback (confirmation of satisfactorily completing the placement).
005 – Coursework (Reflection of Work Placement or Professional Challenge)
This assessment will require you to reflect on your work placement or professional challenge and devise a plan for gathering the 250 hours required to become accredited by The Society of Sports Therapists.
Please note that assessment components 001, 002 and 003 must be passed in accordance with PSRB requirements (The Society of Sports Therapists) for 80% attendance and all theoretical and practical assessments on ‘sports therapy modules’ to be passed. Assessment component 004 must be passed as a University requirement.
