SHN4292 - Health and Wellbeing

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the core sociological and psychological concepts of health.
Identify how health is experienced by different social groups.
Evaluate the key social and psychological determinants of health.
Search, analyse and evaluate information on contemporary health topics.
Collaborate and discuss contemporary health issues to generate reasoned solutions.

Content:

Introduction of core concepts from sociology and psychology in health and wellbeing such as diverse approaches to health, socioeconomics and health and theoretical models of health interaction. Political and healthcare responses to population health and wellbeing issues. Contemporary health topics such as alcohol and drug misuse, sun safety and mental health. Evaluating specific health interventions and producing responses through case studies and problem based learning.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Students will typically experience a range of teaching and learning methods including lectures, seminars and small group problem focussed learning workshops. Learning will be through application of theoretical positions to real-life case studies.

Further details relating to assessment
50% of the module is assessed through a written essay.
The remaining 50% of the module is assessed through an Integrated Assessment which will take place in the Programme Level Assessment Period. The integrated assessment combines elements from a number of modules, to give students the opportunity to show integrated thinking and learning.
