Content:

The module acts as an introduction to the two core pillars of financial management; financial accounting and management accounting. The financial accounting side of the module will introduce and apply accounting concepts, bases and policies in a sport business context and will enable you to explore and interpret financial statements so that you can articulate the meaning of financial data. The management accounting side of the module will equip you with the knowledge and skills necessary to plan, make effective decisions and exercise control in financial management in a sport business context.

Learning and Teaching Information:

This module will use a combination of lectures and IT room seminars as key learning and teaching methods to support your academic development. Lectures will provide a structured introduction to core concepts, theories, and essential knowledge, helping you understand the key foundations of the subject. They are an efficient way to deliver content to large groups and spark interest in complex topics.

In contrast, IT room seminars will offer interactive, hands-on learning experiences, allowing you to apply the concepts learned in lectures. These sessions will focus on practical skills such as using specialised software, conducting research, or analyzing data. The IT room setting promotes active engagement and collaboration in smaller groups, encouraging problem-solving and the development of digital competencies.

By combining these methods, the module ensures you gain both theoretical understanding and practical experience, enhancing your overall learning and critical thinking skills.

Further Details Relating to Assessment

Task 001 – Group presentation
A presentation that requires you to undertake a summary analysis of financial performance and position for a number of organisations in a relevant sport business industry. The presentation should compare at least 5 organisations of similar standing (benchmarking) and consider their overall financial health. Recommendations should be made and conclusions drawn about the status of the organisations based on their own financial health and that of their competitors. The presentation should be based on key performance indicators for the organisations as decided on by the group.

Task 002 – Individual report
A report that undertakes a costing analysis (including budgeting and relevant investment appraisal techniques) for an expansion project for an organisation of your choice. This could be, for example, a new stadium build or infrastructure style project. The report should provide an overview of the key cost considerations in line with budgeting, cost analysis and performance measurement.

A formative opportunity will be offered on this module – students will be offered the chance to submit a report summary document for feedback after the presentation task has been completed.

Assessment across this module is designed to actively develop students’ digital skills, including the ability to create impactful presentations and use Excel to effectively communicate financial positioning. These skills are essential for engaging with the evolving demands of the global sport industry and for enhancing professional readiness in a digitally driven world.
