Content:

At the heart of this module is the skills and knowledge required to deliver activities to individuals and groups which will develop and extend their strategic and tactical understanding and performance in the field of National Curriculum Physical Education and sports coaching. To do this we will cover the generic tactical and strategic principles for successfully playing invasion, striking & fielding and net/wall games, as well as some specific examples of attacking, defending, freeing and marking skills. Throughout the module you will act as both teacher / coach and learner in the practical setting, and you will have chance to give and receive constructive feedback to and from staff and peers. By the end of the module, you will have developed greater confidence in planning for understanding in a variety of contexts when working with children and young people.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The teaching methods will include lectures, practical, workshops sessions, blended sessions and online learning. There will be designated contact sessions per week - these will be interactive with small group tasks embedded throughout. Post-delivery activities will reinforce the weekly content and will reflect the demands of the assignment.

The integration of these learning environments will facilitate dissemination of underpinning theory, group-based and student led learning and the application of this learning within a teaching (practical) environment. The very strong emphasis on practical sessions will allow students to develop self and peer assessment awareness and develop pedagogical skills in preparation for potential future employment.

This module will also house the work placement/professional challenge.

Limits to the size of the practical and workshop groups allows for individual attention from tutors as well as specific feedback on formative assessment opportunities.

Further Details Relating to Assessment
There will be opportunities for formative assessment throughout the module in the practical sessions. These opportunities will build towards the practical assessment and students will receive feedback from their peers and from members of staff.

The Coursework component will be a complete Lesson Plan which will further develop the work done in the practical assessment into a full learning experience for a class sized group of young people.

The Practical teaching assessment will be a group practical where students will seek to develop and progress the skills of the group in a chosen Games activity in a small sided game context. The practical assessment will draw upon the learning outcomes of Introduction to teaching and coaching 1 as well as this module and is therefore an Integrated Assessment.

Complete a two-week ‘employer challenge’ and/or an optional two-week placement, supporting students working towards graduate-level employment. Completion confirmed by attendance and engagement with the professional challenge or feedback from your placement host. Students undertaking a placement will be required to adhere to the sign off process with the Careers and Placements team.
