On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1 - Show an awareness of the key agencies involved in developing physical education and sport;
2 - Explain how historical and contemporary sport and physical education policies shape sports development models in practice;
3 - Provide a rationale for the role of physical education throughout the life course; and,
4 - Explain how practical areas of teaching Physical Education can impact on physical education, physical activity and sport throughout the life course.
This module will introduce you to the development of sport, physical activity, and physical education in the UK. It will explore the concept of physical literacy and its influence on national policy and curriculum frameworks (e.g., the PE National Curriculum, Sport England strategies). You will develop an understanding of the structure and governance of sport and physical education, enhancing your awareness of the key organisations involved in their delivery across the UK. This knowledge will prepare you for working in physical education and sports coaching settings.
You will be provided with an overview of historical and contemporary UK sport and physical education policies. Understanding key philosophical and ideological perspectives underpinning those policies will be key topics as will the promotion of inclusion and equity. You will learn how to critique various models applied to developing sport and physical education. The content will be applied to the physical education and sport context. Whilst the focus is on the UK, comparisons will be drawn between international examples so that you will gain an insight into the role of sport development more globally.
You will take part in practical areas, including OAA, dance and gymnastics, you will be introduced to planning such activities and will learn about how these can impact on wider development of physical education, physical activity and sport across the life course.
You will learn through a combination of lectures, workshops, practicals, blended and independent learning. Lectures cover the content where you will acquire knowledge of the policies and strategies. Workshops are smaller groups where you will have the opportunity to reflect on the knowledge acquired in lectures in the context of physical education and sport. You will engage in group activities, promoting social study time, where the use of technologies such as Padlet will be commonplace. You will take an active lead in the delivery of workshop and practical sessions, co-creating on projects, session ideas and developing confidence to engage in discussion, working as a team to produce an outcome, which is especially helpful in the physical education setting. You will be provided with clear guidance each week as to the expectations of you for independent learning. Some off-site activities may be incorporated into the module e.g. for OAA activities.
