On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1 - Identify, critically evaluate and make appropriate use of a range of sources and evidence to identify and develop a work-based project designed to improve or address a relevant issue of practice
2 - Synthesise theoretical and professional frameworks and knowledge, and insights from research evidence to inform the development of practice-based solutions to address a relevant issue of practice
3 - Critically evaluate the impact of the project, reflecting on its outcomes, limitations, and implications for future practice in Education
4 - Communicate the processes of development, enactment, and / or impact of your project clearly and effectively, to both specialist and non-specialist audiences.
This module provides you with the opportunity to develop and conduct a substantial, independent project that addresses a real-world issue of practice in education. You will apply the knowledge, skills, and critical reflection developed throughout the programme to design and deliver a project that demonstrates your ability to investigate and analyse the issue at hand, formulate and enact evidence-based recommendations for professional practice.
You will:
- Identify a relevant practice-based problem that aligns with programme themes (e.g., ethical leadership, curriculum design, evidence-based practice, critical evaluation of practice, assessment, contemporary dilemmas and issues in education, pedagogy and andragogy, initial teacher education and continuing professional learning and development).
- Conduct a review of professional, research and other literature to frame and situate your project within current professional and / or academic debates. This can include materials that you have used in previous professionally (but not academically) accredited work, such as NPQH projects.
- Develop a clear project focus and plan, incorporating appropriate and evidence informed aims and outcomes, ethical considerations, consultation and information gathering, proposals for action and measuring impact, and an evaluation of the impact on your development and / or others’ development.
- Implement your project, collecting and evaluating evidence and data as appropriate.
- Reflect critically on the outcomes of your project, identifying limitations, learning points, and implications for future practice [in both written an oral formats].
- Produce a project portfolio that communicates your findings clearly and professionally, using academic conventions and Level 7 standards of analysis and evaluation. The portfolio is a negotiated assessment and depends on the nature of the professional practice issue at hand, and the proposals you have developed to address it.
This module uses a blended learning approach to support the development of advanced research and critical thinking skills in a policing context.
Your learning will take place through:
- Three taught sessions, online or in person if numbers allow, which outline the process of professional development in the module, and introduce key concepts and practices such as finding appropriate resources, meeting ethical and professional obligations, and professional writing at L7.
- Individual supervision meetings to provide tailored guidance on your project framing, design, proposed practice methods, impact analysis, and critical reflection.
- Independent study to conduct your research, critically engage with literature, and develop your dissertation.

Further Details Relating to Assessment
Each portfolio will contain materials that encompass the professional or practice response to the issue that was identified, and explanatory materials that outline the process through which the project was enacted and evaluated.
For instance, the 3000-word equivalent professional or practice response might include:

- Materials designed to engage, help and or enable stakeholders to act in different ways to address the relevant problem;
- Pedagogic or Andragogic materials for practice, such as sequences of learning, lecture, session or lesson plans and resources, learning activity descriptions and resources.
Whilst the explanatory materials might include:
- A 15 minute live, or video presentation or interview with the student that outlines the impetus, evidence base, plans and impact of the project; or
- A reflective journal of 3000 words or equivalent time (if audio or video) which details the process through which a relevant problem was identified, investigated and critically evaluated in the light of professional and /or research literature; or,
- A series of 3 five-minute recorded interviews with colleagues, clients or other stakeholders who outline the impact on their work, learning or development of the issue at hand, the process of developing the project, and its enactment.
Formative feedback will be provided through supervision meetings at key stages, including project design, review of relevant professional and research literature, draft plans and analysis, and assignment completion. You are encouraged to submit draft materials for feedback and engage fully with your supervisor to refine your work.
Please refer to the Module Handbook for full details of the assessment task, marking criteria, and submission guidelines.
