On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1 Outline the expected behaviours of a psychology undergraduate including the ability to self-reflect in relation to own personal and professional experiences.
2 Identify key skills for effective academic writing, presentations, group work, and digital tools.
3 Find psychological research to address and respond to real-world employer challenges.
This module provides you with the essential knowledge and skills that you will require to approach degree level academic work and achieve academic success. It explores the hidden curriculum which refers to the unwritten rules and expectations that shape the student experience. You will develop core academic skills including APA referencing, use of digital tools (e.g. Adobe Express), academic writing for higher education, communication skills and teamwork. You will also learn to develop skills for effective time management, overcoming procrastination, utilising feedback effectively and develop resilience. By integrating psychological theory with practical application, you will develop the ability to navigate the rest of your degree programme and learn strategies for personal and professional growth.
You will be taught in weekly interactive group tutorials with your personal tutor. In these tutorials, you will take part in a range of interactive activities including but not limited to group discussions, debates, quizzes, group projects, role playing scenarios and reflection activities. Prior to the tutorials, you will be expected to complete a pre-session activity, which may include reading set texts, relevant online videos, discussion boards and pre-recorded taught material. You will also be assigned some further guided learning activities after the tutorial.
