POL6406 - Work-Based Project

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 - Design and execute a substantive work-based project that addresses a policing-related issue through critical inquiry;
2 - Apply appropriate research methods to collect, analyse, and interpret data relevant to the project’s aims;
3 - Critically evaluate the outcomes of the project, drawing conclusions and recommendations for professional practice; and,
4 - Communicate findings in a coherent, academically rigorous, and professionally relevant manner.

Content:

This module represents the culmination of the programme and requires students to undertake an independent, applied project in their workplace. Students will identify a real-world problem or development area within their professional context and design a project that generates insight, learning, and potential improvement.

Topics include the following:

- Project scoping and problem identification within operational policing

- Designing research with professional relevance and academic integrity

- Data collection methods (e.g., interviews, document analysis, surveys)

- Ethical approval processes and responsible conduct of research

- Data analysis and interpretation (quantitative or qualitative)

- Drawing conclusions and making evidence-based recommendations

- Structuring and writing up a project report suitable for academic and practitioner audiences

- Reflection on project impact, limitations, and future development.

Learning and Teaching Information:

This module supports students through the full cycle of independent project design, implementation, and critical reflection. Academic supervision is tailored to individual project needs and focuses on quality, ethics, and relevance.



Learning will take place through:

- Project briefings and workshops on methodology, ethics, and analysis;
- One-to-one academic supervision to guide the design, execution, and write-up phases; and,
- Guided independent study involving data collection, critical analysis, and reporting.
