POL6392 - Policing Abuse & Public Protection

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 - Explain key definitions, legislation and guidance associated with ‘public protection’ policing associated with abuse and suspects and offenders;
2 - Assess the role, impact and importance of Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) and the use of community intelligence in managing offenders;
3 - Analyse potential links between serious and organised crime and public protection issues;
4 - Examine instances where law enforcement personnel have misused their position of trust and police powers to commit public protection offences; and,
5 - Evaluate the effect of media coverage on public protection policing strategy.

Content:

This module scans all areas of public protection policing, policy, research, theory and practice. Students will be introduced to the diverse and complex nature of public protection policing. The concept of multi-agency working will be a theme throughout this module, with reference to serious case reviews and the management of offenders.

Students will apply legislation to cases studies, developing problem solving and critical thinking skills. As the module progresses students will develop an understanding of key considerations in public protection particularly around the management of offenders. Students will understand the complexities of investigating a public protection incident, exploring their own values, attitudes and bias.

Further Details Relating to Assessment
Written Assignment: Students will write a 2000-word critique on an area of public protection of their choice, with reference to how police manage public protection, analysing concepts, theories and evidence from a range or academic resources.

Case study scenario (TBC). Students are referred to the module handbook for full details relating to assessments.

Please note that the practical case study (02) must be passed to meet professional requirements. The module must be passed (minimum 40) as a requirement of the College of Policing and cannot be condoned for marginal failure.
