On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1 - Analyse the importance of assessment across the primary curriculum (K1, K3, E6);
2 - Review ethical and value driven requirements within the KS1 & KS2 curriculum (I4);
3 - Critically evaluate theoretical principles underpinning assessment in each subject area studied (I1); and,
4 - Reflect on assessment that supports teaching and learning, demonstrating understanding of how these may be applied effectively in school contexts (P2).
This module is designed to support our students in becoming assessment literate within the core primary curriculum subjects. It develops the skills and understanding of formative and summative assessment of pupils within each subject.
Students will explore the principles of questioning, high-quality feedback and how this links to pupil learning, pupil progress and planning. Students will explore how monitoring is used at key points to ensure pupils are aware of key points and ideas in the lesson/sequence of lessons.
Students will learn how to think of assessment as not only formal recognition of achievement but the way in which teachers monitor progress and identify next steps in learning; closing the gap between where a pupil is and where the teacher wants them to be.
Students will know and understand how to assess the relevant subject and curriculum areas including statutory national and local assessment and data systems, relevant to age phase specialism.
Students will develop skills to critically evaluate and apply research findings and other evidence to inform their practice in relation to assessment and its place in the planning, teaching and assessment cycle.
The module is taught in subjects and delivered through lectures and workshops, pre and post reading and tasks to develop deeper understanding. Teaching and learning modes include directed reading, guided discussions, whole class and small group learning and workshop tasks. These are designed to provide formative feedback opportunities which lead students towards the summative assessment of the module.

Further Detail Relating to Assessment
Formative feedback will be ongoing during taught session as a best-practice model, as well to support student progress.
The assessment is separated into components with the first submission at the mid-point of this module. As well as providing a summative assessment point, formative assessment will be used to feed -back and -forward to the students and support the submission of component 2.
Component 1 will assess the students’ understanding of the assessment landscape within the English education system and how summative and formative assessment is used on a class, school and national level. Component 2 will assess the students’ understanding of how a teaching professional uses pupil learning and work to ensure pupil progress.
Full details of the summative assessments can be found within the module handbook.
Summative assessment submissions will be marked against the appropriate marking rubric and criteria.
Please note that a substantive attempt (i.e. a mark of 20% or more) must be made on all components of the module, but an overall grade of 40% or higher is required for credits.
