NUR4113 - Nursing Associate Practice 2

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, apprentices will be able to:

1 - Reflect on your skills, ability, and responsibility to provide safe, effective, and evidence-based nursing care.

2 - Utilise service user and carer feedback to reflect on the development of your communication and relationship skills in practice.

3 - Work as part of a team and identify the different roles, responsibilities and contributions of different professional disciplines in the provision of effective healthcare.

4 - Recognise how different approaches to person centred assessment, planning and evaluation of care are applied to episodes of care.

5 - Demonstrate knowledge and skill in the safe administration of medicines and medicines calculations and your application of these principles in practice.

Content:

This module will enable you to build upon your experience of nursing practice gained in Practice 1. The module is the second of two practice-based learning modules that feature in Level 4 of the programme. In accordance with the assessment framework set out in Nursing Associate Practice Assessment Document (NAPAD 1) you are expected to carry out care with guidance from others but to do so with increasing competence and confidence. Practice learning in this module is designed to support and guide your achievement of the proficiencies shown in the Nursing Associate Practice Assessment Document (NAPAD 1) together with the Apprenticeship Standards for Nursing Associates (IATE, 2019). These proficiencies reflect the 6 platforms and the communication and relationship management skills and nursing procedures identified in the Standards of proficiency for nursing associates (NMC, 2018).

The six platforms are as follows:

Platform 1: Being an accountable professional
Platform 2: Promoting health and preventing ill health
Platform 3: Providing and monitoring care
Platform 4: Working in teams
Platform 5: Improving safety and quality of care
Platform 6: Contributing to integrated care

You must achieve all appropriate proficiencies listed in the NAPAD 1 at least once by the end of stage one of the programme. This means that you will have been working towards the achievement of these proficiencies in all practice modules in the programme for Level 4. If a proficiency is assessed and achieved early within the year you are expected to maintain competency at this level throughout the year.

You will undertake the Part 1 Episodes of Care – Summative assessment in this practice learning module. It is a programme requirement that you achieve a pass in a Medicines Management assessment in a practice learning placement within each stage of your programme. The learning outcomes and requisite competencies for this assessment can be found in the NAPAD Part 1. The Medicines Management assessment is a holistic assessment carried out by your practice assessor. You must achieve all competencies in order to be graded as a pass. You may elect to be assessed in Medicines Management in either Nursing Associate Practice 1 or Nursing Associate Practice 2 and must be allowed a number of practice opportunities to administer medicines under supervision prior to their assessment.

In this module you will undertake 15 hrs of simulated practice education as part of your primary placement. Please note this will be delivered on campus in the Health & Life Sciences Building and the hours will be recorded on your NAPAD. This placement is hosted by LTU and delivered in the Health and Life Sciences Buidling. The simulated practice education placement meets all the Standards for Student Supervision and Assessment as set out by the NMC (2023).

Learning and Teaching Information:

The learning experiences will be influenced by the learning opportunities within your practice learning areas. Your primary/hub placement will be your usual place of work as an apprentice and you will have protected learning time to undertake “on the job learning” during this time you will be considered as supernumerary to enable you to meet the requirements and development as set out in your NAPAD. External placements are selected based on the learning opportunities that they provide for you to meet their programme requirements. Employer partners must ensure that your primary/hub placements are afforded Protected learning time (NMC,2018) to meet their programme requirements and a contemporaneous record of protected learning time activities must be completed by yourself. In external placements you are classed as a supernumerary learner. Working with other disciplines, gaining feedback from patients/service users, and being assessed in proficiencies specified within your NAPAD form a focus for learning, teaching and assessment. Throughout practice learning, you are required to take responsibility for your own learning and reflectively self-assess your progress throughout.

Further Details Relating to Assessment

Formative assessment of your clinical practice will be facilitated through your mid-piont interview with your Practice Assessor/Practice Supervisor to review your progress and achievements which will be recorded in your NAPAD. This meeting is an opportunity to identify what is going well and agree any further learning opportunities within an action plan to enhance your successful completion of the module. If not completed in Practice 1 you will need to be assessed and achieve a pass in your medicines management assessment as a component in your NAPAD. You are entitled to and encouraged to engage in formative practice opportunities and agree with your Practice Assessor when you are ready to undertake the summative medicines management assessment. You also have access to safeMedicate where you can undertake unlimited self assessment of your medicines calculation skills.

(1). Achieve a pass for Practice 2 verified by your practice assessor. Complete all required elements as outlined in the NAPAD e-portfolio verified by your practice assessor. Please note if you pass this element but have any hours to retrieve you must complete these in the supplementary retrieval period during the final 4 weeks of the academic year.

(2). Online Exam 1 Hour – SafeMedicate: This exam will assess your medicines calculation skills in tablets and capsules, liquid medicines and injections. You must achieve 80% to pass this exam.

Please note that there is no compensation, each component must be passed at 40% - NMC regulations. 80% must be achieved in the SafeMedicate Online Exam.
