This module is the first of two practice-based learning modules that feature in Level 4 of the programme. In accordance with the assessment framework set out in Nursing Associate Practice Assessment Document NAPAD Part 1 you are expected to carry our care with guidance from others. The module draws on your practice-based learning experiences throughout the year, providing a focal assessment point at which you will demonstrate successful achievement of the required NMC (2018) Standards of Proficiency for Nursing Associates to progress to Part 2 of the NAPAD. You will work with support from your Practice Assessors and Practice Supervisors to achieve competence in relation to the agreed NMC competencies using the Nursing Associate Practice Assessment Document (NAPAD) Part 1 to record the different components of assessment and feedback. Outcomes detailed within the NMC Standards of Proficiency detail the essential knowledge and skills that you must demonstrate when caring for people of all ages and across all care settings. You will participate in initial, mid-point and final interviews to record progress in achievement of competencies in areas such as: Professional Values, Proficiencies, Episode(s) of Care, Medicines Management, Patient/Service User/Carer Feedback Form, Record of working with and learning from others/interprofessional working, Record of communication/additional feedback, Record of working with and learning from other; records of interpersonal working, records of personal feedback & communication, and the Ongoing Achievement Record (NAOAR).
You must achieve all proficiencies listed in the NAPAD Part 1 at least once by the end of Level 4. This means that you will have been working towards the achievement of these proficiencies in both practice modules in the programme for Level 4. If a proficiency is assessed and achieved early within the year you are expected maintain competency at this level throughout the year. You will also undertake the Part 1 Episodes of Care – Formative assessment in this Module Placement. The purpose of this assessment is to support your development in preparation for the Part 1 Episodes of Care – Summative assessment that is required in Nursing Associate Practice 2. It is a programme requirement that students achieve a pass in a Medicines Management assessment in practice learning within each stage of their programme. The Medicines Management assessment is a holistic assessment carried out by the student’s practice assessor. Students must achieve all medicines management competencies in order to be graded as a pass. Students may elect to be assessed in Medicines Management in either this module or in Nursing Associate Practice 2 and must be allowed a number of practice opportunities to administer medicines under supervision prior to their assessment. In this module you will undertake 15 hrs of simulated practice education as part of your primary placement. Please note this will be delivered on campus in the Health & Life Sciences Building and the hours will be recorded on your NAPAD. This placement is hosted by LTU and delivered in the Health and Life Sciences Building. The simulated practice education placement meets all the Standards for Student Supervision and Assessment as set out by the NMC (2023).
The learning experiences will be influenced by the learning opportunities within your practice learning areas. Your primary/hub placement will be your usual place of work as an apprentice and you will have protected learning time to undertake “on the job learning” during this time you will be considered as supernumerary to enable you to meet the requirements and development as set out in your NAPAD. External placements are selected based on the learning opportunities that they provide for you to meet their programme requirements. Employer partners must ensure that your primary/hub placements are afforded Protected learning time (NMC,2018) to meet their programme requirements and a contemporaneous record of protected learning time activities must be completed by yourself. In external placements you are classed as a supernumerary learner. Working with other disciplines, gaining feedback from patients/service users, and being assessed in proficiencies specified within your NAPAD form a focus for learning, teaching and assessment. Throughout practice learning, you are required to take responsibility for your own learning and reflectively self-assess your progress throughout.
