LAW7075 - Legal Foundations

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

Demonstrate critical knowledge and systematic understanding of the operation and principles of the English Legal System as well as legal skills.

Demonstrate critical knowledge and conceptual understanding and ability to undertake complex analysis of the legal concepts, values, principles and rules relating to the English Legal System as well as legal skills.

Apply acquired knowledge to substantive problems and evaluate critically issues, and comment critically on the law and related problems and issues to arrive at independent conclusions.

Content:

This module provides a general introduction to the operation and fundamental principles of the legal system of England and Wales, enabling you to acquire a basic knowledge of: The main legal institutions (including the main legal professions); Sources of law; The criminal and civil justice systems; Rules of interpretation and Legal services and the funding of legal services.

This module provides you with the skills required to study law at postgraduate level, and to develop the critical and research skills required for both the study and practice of the law. The skills studied will be applied in different contexts through other modules on the LLM programme, providing you with the opportunity for progressive development.

This module will also provide an introduction to the Legal Skills that are the backbone of any legal professional’s career.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Student learning will be supported through workshops, which use and include a blended approach in providing formal lectures and delivery, seminars, group work and tutorials.

The module material and its wider regulatory context will be outlined and its operations will be illustrated through analysis of case studies selected to cover all the key institutions and functions and their interrelations.

The module will be delivered through a diverse range of teaching workshops, which will include a range of teaching methods. The emphasis will be on practice of skills, although workshops will be used to provide you with an understanding of methodology and the application of the skills in different context, and to support learning strategies to help you develop. Group activities and simulations will allow you to build on the seminars by undertaking active learning activities to practise the skills and receive feedback.

Further details relating to assessment
The summative assessments will be supplemented with formative assessment throughout the module. Multiple choice tests will be made available via the virtual learning environment, Moodle, which will provide you with immediate feedback as to your understanding. In addition, you will be given the opportunity to engage with scenario and essay based tasks and both tutor assessed feedback and peer assessed feedback will be provided ensuring you are fully prepared for your summative assessment.

Presentation
This takes the form of a 30-minute presentation during which you are encouraged to use visual aids such as PowerPoint or similar on a topic which provides you with the opportunity to criticlally analyse an aspect of the English and Welsh Legal System and demonstrate some key legal skills. The presentation will be an individual presentation.
