Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the main principles of English law affecting the media
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the main principles of English law affecting the press and broadcast regulatory arrangements
Apply key areas of law to practical journalistic scenarios and demonstrate understanding of safe news practice
Critically evaluate key areas of law relating to journalists

Content:

TThe main principles of English law affecting the media, including the laws pertaining to contempt, copyright, defamation, privacy, human rights, court reporting, access to information and terrorism. The module will cover key legal areas which crop up in day-to-day reporting and also reflect changes in legislation / case law which impact on journalists.

Learning and Teaching Information:

This module is taught via interactive sessions which are designed to foster strong student engagement with media law and to develop both breadth and depth of knowledge. The teaching sessions are created to encourage both application of legal knowledge and critical thinking around key areas of media law.
