On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1 - Analyse how professional values, principles and competencies contribute to high quality, safe and compassionate care of individuals, families and communities;
2 - Demonstrate professional values, care and respect when working with colleagues, service users, families and carers;
3 - Engage in teamwork and collaborate with others to achieve a shared objective;
4 - Gain experience in a professional setting or professional challenge, developing communication skills and digital skills, and observe leadership; and,
5 - Reflect on development of personal and professional skills, acknowledge achievements and set goals for ongoing development.
The module will cover core values and principles required for you to deliver safe, high quality and compassionate care to individuals, families and communities including accountability, duty of care, codes of conduct, safeguarding, ethical practice, social justice, personalised care and professional identity.
You will examine the skills required for professional practice including reflective practice, effective communication, supporting equality and diversity, quality assurance, team and multi-agency working. The influence of policy and legal frameworks on social welfare and contemporary service delivery will be introduced. There will be opportunity to consider other Health Education modules on associated topics in the seminars in this module.
Students are encouraged to explore how they develop relevant competencies on work placement during the Professional Development Block at the end of Semester 2 which forms part of this module. You will also meet further employability skills as per handbook.
Finally, students will consider their academic skills journey through this module, considering strengths and elements they have built upon, through the varying assessments. This will take into account the culmination of the Biopsychosocial model where appropriate if on placement and other skills developed if the professional challenge is undertaken.
This will enable links to be made between the different theoretical perspectives and concepts covered in each module, thereby building a holistic understanding of how the biopsychosocial approach and application of professional values and principles meets complex health and social care needs of individuals across the life course.
