Content:

This module critically examines current and contemporary theoretical perspectives and approaches to leadership, considering how to support others through a supportive team culture including responsibility of supporting development of the key person. The expected behaviours across differing roles are examined, including how to be a positive and proactive member of a team, who can be assertive and exercise diplomacy. The benefits and challenges of everyday leadership are evaluated, considering how our own and others’ behaviour can impact on a team, as well as impacting babies and children due to the importance of role modelling. The implementation of mentoring, coaching, training, and formal supervision is debated at all stages of a career, considering ways to evaluate its impact through curriculum delivery or pedagogical leadership. The importance of fostering a culture of mutual support and teamwork is analysed, promoting equality of opportunity, and supporting confidential discussions of sensitive issues. Strategies are considered to support differing levels of motivation and engage colleagues to develop their practice, establishing a positive culture of seeking feedback from others. The role of leaders to confidently identify and competently challenge issues is examined, unpicking the strategies that support difficult conversations. Your own career leadership aspirations will be reflected upon, identifying skills you wish to further develop, before the wider influence of social leadership is considered to enhance the sustainability of the profession.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The teaching and learning methods for this module are underpinned by programme strategy that aligns with Leeds Trinity University Learning, Teaching and Academic Experience Strategy (LTAE 2022-2026) in that it aims to transform the way we work co-creatively with you, the student, how we connect you and our learning and teaching with the outside world and societal issues. Through this approach we support you on a personalised, values-based and career-led journey through your studies. You will be taught in a variety of methods including problem-based learning using case studies, reflective practice workshops, flipped classrooms; traditional lectures; including participatory workshops which utilise co-creative exercises that will also influence learning and teaching methods. Additional online material will be supplemented using a variety of media and resources, ranging from videos and selected textbooks and articles. The teaching will be face to face and online tutorials may be used to support student progression. Guest speakers and employers will be engaged with to develop an understanding of current professional practice.

The practice of relational pedagogy and person-centred planning will be showcased by staff in their delivery style. Further detail on the specific teaching and learning including how these have been developed in response to student feedback, can be found in the module handbook.

Further Details Relating to Assessment

Students are referred to Module Handbook for full details.

Students create a short case study to support the contextual analysis of the assessment. The case study is approved by the tutor within the early part of the module, building in key themes from the curriculum content.

Consideration must be given to the importance of teams following procedures in the work setting, including where appropriate how leaders update and develop policies and procedures, for:
o information sharing
o use of technology
o referring development concerns
o protecting practitioners, for example media and online presence
o staff health and safety, including mental health and wellbeing support.

All students will have an opportunity within the modules for formative assessment support, to incrementally aid the completion of summative assessment tasks. Formative assessments may take the form of peer review, guided self-reflection, tutorial, draft feedback, and where relevant employer feedback.
