ENG7013 - Second Language Acquisition and Use

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:

1 - Explain, compare and evaluate key theoretical approaches to researching second language acquisition.
2 - Outline and appraise factors shaping second language acquisition and synthesise and critically engage with research on these matters.
3 - Identify and critique societal discourses and ideologies of L2 varieties and their speakers.

Content:

This module develops your knowledge of how second/additional languages (henceforth L2) are acquired and used. It advances your understanding of the main theoretical approaches to research in this field. It also provides you with insights into key factors shaping second language acquisition, such as cognitive, psychological and social aspects. Furthermore, it equips you with an awareness of issues arising from L2 use, encouraging a critical stance on societal discourses and ideologies of L2 varieties and their speakers.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Learning on the module happens both during ‘live’ classroom time and through ‘pre’- and ‘post’-class guided engagement with tasks and resources. You are expected to come to class having done the specified preparation, such as reading and other set tasks. For example, this will include taking a critical stance on common language acquisition myths as well as language learning tips shared through TED talks, YouTube channels or websites. Classroom interaction takes the form of workshops, which enable dynamic learning through a range of different formats to suit your needs and the requirements of the topic. Classroom time will be flexibly spent with mini lectures, individual tasks, pair work, group activities, discussions and formative feedback on individual and group work. For instance, you will critically explore and contrast research and lay conceptualisations of second language learning and of L2 learners, L2 users and ‘native speakers’, as well as analysing samples of ‘learner language’ or L2 varieties and publicly available classroom interactions.

Further Details Relating to Assessment

The first assessment is an evaluative essay on theories and research on second language acquisition, which you will select, synthesise and appraise.

The second assessment is an artefact in a format that you will negotiate with the tutor in advance. For example, this could take the shape of a recorded presentation, video, mindmap or poster. It will identify, discuss and critique an issue relating to second language acquisition and use, taking a critical stance on related societal discourses and ideologies.

There will be an ‘assignment unpacking’ session for each component. Throughout the module, summative assessment will be preceded by formative exercises and feedback, such as practice analysis, short written pieces, oral or written reports on set tasks and referencing exercises.

Full details are available in the Module Handbook.
