ENG7006 - Dissertation

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:

1 - Design, plan and carry out a research project within TESOL or Applied Linguistics.
2 - Appraise and synthesise theories and approaches in the discipline and handle a range of primary and secondary material.
3 - Identify, evaluate and address any ethical and legal considerations relevant to a research project.
4 - Produce a structured and coherently argued report on a research project in the form of a dissertation, supported by appropriately presented evidence, making an original contribution to critical scholarly debate on the topic.

Content:

You will design, carry out and report on a research project of your choice within the field of TESOL or Applied Linguistics. Under the guidance and supervision of an assigned member of staff you will formulate a research proposal, obtain ethical approval for your topic and research methods from the Faculty Research Ethics and Integrity Committee, carry out the approved research, and report on it in the form of a dissertation that adheres to academic conventions in the field and is supported by a body of previous scholarly work on the topic.

Learning and Teaching Information:

You will attend and engage with workshops introducing you to the dissertation and providing you with the necessary guidance for conducting an independent research project. You are expected to come to class having done the specified preparation, such as reading and other set tasks. Each student will be assigned a supervisor to guide and support you through the dissertation process, including the attainment of ethical approval for your planned research. You will agree a schedule of research and writing steps with your supervisor. You are expected to take ownership of your research project with guidance from your supervisor, and to be pro-active in arranging supervision meetings and seeking formative feedback.

Further Details Relating to Assessment

The dissertation is a written report on a research project within TESOL or Applied Linguistics, to be identified and carried out by you under the guidance of an assigned supervisor. You must obtain ethical approval from the Faculty Research Ethics and Integrity Committee before commencing your research.

There will be ‘assignment unpacking’ sessions. Throughout the module, you will have opportunities for formative feedback on research plans and written drafts, such as during supervision meetings and/or via email.
