On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1 - Develop a professional CV and cover letter which can be adapted and tailored to various roles within the programme sector;
2 - Apply industry-specific knowledge and skills during work experience placements, reflecting on personal and professional growth within a real-world company setting; and,
3 - Utilise Reflective methodology to honestly and openly reflect on their work experience, synthesising these reflections into forward planning for Level 6 and graduate employment.
This professional placement module is an integral part of the professional pathway. It serves as a bridge between the professional development focus at Level 4 and the advanced professional learning through work at Level 6.
The module provides placement guidance, including support for CV building, tailored applications, networking, self-marketing, interview preparation and general employability skills. These skills build upon and complement those introduced at Level 4. You will benefit from insights offered by external speakers, industry contacts and internal expertise from the Careers+Placements.
This module is designed to prepare you for a professional external placement, equipping you with the tools and knowledge necessary to succeed and impress potential employers. Additionally, it helps you focus on identifying potential entry-level jobs after graduation, providing an opportunity to map out your final-year career goals and plan for upskilling to achieve these ambitions.
The learning and teaching methods for this module are designed to equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge to apply for and secure a variety of placement opportunities. These placements can include self-sourced projects, freelancing, part-time flexible roles or full-time positions.
The module's schedule is strategically aligned with Journalism and Media Week, where students engage directly with industry professionals. Following this, students have access to numerous one-to-one sessions with Careers+Placements, the module tutor and personal tutors. This approach supports the diverse range of student goals and ensures tailored guidance for individual applications and career aspirations.

Further Detail Relating to Assessment
There will be a formative assessment in the first four weeks of this module. Full details are published in the Module Handbook relating to this and all other assessment components.
Application Portfolio You will choose two job adverts from the list provided and create a tailored CV and cover letter for each. These must be adapted specifically to the role and industry in question. You are encouraged to use the example CVs provided as templates and exemplars but remember that your work must be customised to fit the job descriptions you select.
Placement You will spend a minimum of 100 hours on work placement. This can be flexible and done throughout the year on a part-time basis or full-time during the placement block after Easter. You can do more than one placement and this is encouraged as it really helps expand your experience and networks.
Critical Reflection with Smart Plan A short critical reflection on the placement mapped into a SMART Career plan for your final year is completed. It is hoped that after your first two years and your first placement, you will have a better idea of what post-graduation role you want. This plan is your blueprint for achieving that and a chance to guide your final year towards a job, further study or freelancing.
Please note that placements must be passed for progression as per University regulations.
