DSM5015 - Advanced Production Skills

Objectives:

On succcessful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 - Show comprehensive production skills relevant to the programme of study;
2 - Demonstrate advanced proficiency in camera operation, audio recording and editing techniques; and,
3 - Engage in casting, research and pre-production planning to support project development at a professional level.

Content:

Building on your learning from Level 4, you will further develop your practical understanding of professional video and audio production. You will enrich your understanding of cinematography, lighting, audio recording and editing, utilising more advanced / specialist production equipment, techniques and software appropriate to your course.

The module will provide opportunities for you to develop your existing production skills and the associated enabling creative skills, techniques and practices at a more advanced level, towards your final year.

The workshops and assignments will have a focus on group working. This is to support and foster professional networking and relevant social and crew-working skills, as well as improving confidence on set/location.

Learning and Teaching Information:

This module is made up of an interconnected and progressing series of in-person tutor led practical workshops in which our experienced team of specialist staff will guide you through use of practical equipment, apps or software, with a view to challenging and improving the technical skills you already have, and opening the door to multimedia skills you may not yet have tried at a professional level. Each week there will be a series of post-activity tasks designed to help build upon the practical skills developed.

Further Details Relating to Assessment
There will be a formative assessment within the first 4 weeks of each semester. This will not count towards your final module mark but feedback will be given. Full details will be available within the Module Handbook.

Assignment 1 is an individual presentation which takes place at the end of Semester 1. This will relate directly to one of the topics covered so far and give you the opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge of that specific production area.

Assignment 2 is a multimedia artefact relevant to your programme of study. This may take the form of a film, video, TV programme or other suitable multimedia platform.
