On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1 - Demonstrate critical awareness of key social work learning associated with Placement 2 in considering the Professional Capability Framework (British Association of Social Workers 2019) Social Work England Professional Standards (2019) and post qualifying Knowledge & Skills Statements (UK Government 2018).
2 - Critically reflect on learning and development needs from a statutory social work perspective and evaluate issues that can arise between self and placement.
3 - Demonstrate skills of reflective practice on the knowledge, skills and values needed to work in a variety of social work settings including risk assessment, intervention strategies, and professional roles and teams.
This placement focused module builds on the previous placement and enable students to further develop professional knowledge and skills in social work, underpinned by a demonstration of social work values in practice. You will engage in 90 days of assessed practice learning through social work placements.
The module is underpinned by professional social work practice, and you will develop an advanced understanding of the theoretical, knowledge-based approaches underpinning contemporary Social Work interventions. Utilising reflective practice and critical analysis skills, you will assess the appropriateness and effectiveness of undertaking interventions in partnership with service user groups to achieve solution-focused goals such as: effecting positive change; maintaining stability, reducing risk factors; increasing safety and resilient factors; develop trauma informed resilience, developing independence; improving life chances, promoting mental, emotional and physical wellbeing.
You will have opportunities to become knowledgeable and confident in the application of a wide range of holistic practice; reflective practice; Motivational Interviewing; Working with separated parents; Trauma informed practice, Parental Mental Health and Substance Misuse; Family Therapy and Systemic Practice.
Underpinning all of these strategies and approaches is a commitment to continually seek to understand the perspective of people who experience social work interventions, to ensure effective, ethical approaches remain at the forefront of this work. Some consideration in the module will also seek to consider how the delivery of family interventions and case management should consider how adults as part of that wider group of families could also benefit from counselling, task centred work and other related behavioural approaches.
This module is designed around the following the 9 Domains within the Social Work Professional Capabilities Framework and SWE Standards.
The teaching and learning methods associated with preparation for practice in this module are underpinned by programme strategy that aligns with Leeds Trinity University Learning, Teaching and Academic Experience Strategy (LTAE 2022-2026) in that it aims to transform the way we work co-creatively with students, how we connect them and our learning and teaching with the outside world and societal issues and support all our learners on a personalised, values-based and career-led journey through their studies. You will be taught in a variety of methods including simulated practice, problem-based learning using case studies, reflective practice workshops, flipped classrooms; traditional lectures; including participatory workshops which utilise co-creative exercises that will also influence learning and teaching methods.
Additional online material such as discussions and online activities will be supported by a variety of media and resources, ranging from videos and selected textbooks and articles and placed on Moodle. Leeds Trinity University’s on-line learning platform. The module will use a combination of learning and teaching methods using lectures, small group seminars and individual and group tutorials to support your academic and professional development. You will be expected to attend all scheduled sessions and prepare for these in advance by undertaking relevant research and background reading. Guest speakers including practitioners and people with lived experiences will be used to develop an understanding of current Social Work practice. The practice of relational pedagogy and person-centred planning will be showcased by staff in their delivery style.
Students will be expected to complete a portfolio which meets the 9 domains of the PCFs alongside the KSS as this placement will offer social work of a statutory nature.
Formative assessment builds on placement 1 and is employed to support your learning on the module and in practice, allowing you to reflect on feedback on your progress from your Practice Educator, tutors and peers. Formative feedback takes a variety of forms such as reflective tasks and does not contribute to the final module mark. Further detail on the specific teaching and learning including how these have been developed in response to student feedback, can be found in the module handbook.
