The financial planning process and the role of a financial advisor, emphasising the importance of understanding client needs, risk preferences and regulatory considerations. Students will explore personal taxation, covering income tax, capital gains tax and inheritance tax. Tax planning techniques will be applied to optimise client outcomes and ensure compliance with current legislation.

The module introduces investment strategies, including cash-based financial products, equities and collective investment schemes. This section focuses on mapping client needs and preferences to appropriate risk-return products, ensuring alignment with individual objectives and life stages.

Debt management, including advice on personal credit products and strategies for addressing financial difficulties, is a critical aspect of the module. Students will also explore mortgage financing, assessing affordability and options for first-time buyers and buy-to-let investments.

The module covers retirement planning, distinguishing between defined benefit and defined contribution pensions, as well as the implications of the 2015 pension freedoms. Students will evaluate retirement funding strategies and alternatives to traditional annuities.
