BMM5025 - Financial Markets and Institutions

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

Over the last 25 years, the world of financial industry has experienced a very dynamic development which has been characterised by financial innovation, technological enhancement, market failures and stringent regulations. This module will provide comprehensive understanding of the finance theories, concepts operating within the financial markets and institutions. The purpose of the module is to give students the knowledge and understanding of the way financial markets function in terms of the different categories of participants, their role in the financial system and their interaction. The indicative module content will introduce the financial markets, financial instruments and financial institutions including central banking. Thereafter, financial market theories, concepts of risk-return and aspects of behavioural finance will be covered. Finally, the module will end with trends and innovations in financial markets.

Essay: the essay will be on a financial market and institution including its structure, operations, recent development and implications for the economy. The purpose of the essay is to synthesise knowledge from the module and apply theoretical concepts to a practical analysis.

Formative feedback on module activities will be present throughout the module.
