On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1 Develop and implement a self-development plan to support their career aspirations.
2 Analyse and critically evaluate digital tools and platforms for communication, collaboration, networking and personal brand-building based on an awareness of accessibility and inclusivity issues.
3 Evaluate and use a variety of teamworking techniques, including the roles, styles and practices of leadership.
This module aims to equip you with the soft skills and knowledge necessary to be successful in the workplace and in your career planning. You will take charge of your own professional development, practising and evaluating communication and collaboration methods in a variety of individual and team challenges.
You will develop an understanding of different leadership styles and their effectiveness in different business contexts, learn how to communicate effectively with team members and to inspire and motivate others. You will also develop soft skills in decision-making, problem-solving, creativity, conflict-resolution and critical thinking in leadership and team roles.
You will develop an understanding of the impact of modern and digital technologies on working practices, including considerations of accessibility and inclusion in a hybrid workplace. You will leave the module with enhanced skills in using digital tools and platforms for a range of business needs such as communication, collaboration, network building and personal brand-building.
By the end of the module, you should be able to demonstrate proficiency in leadership, teamwork and digital skills, and be able to choose appropriate approaches and tools for your own development and for workplace activities.
This module is taught over 10 weeks and incorporates face to face workshops alongside asynchronous learning opportunities using a variety of digital tools.
1. The workshops are delivered in half day sessions with a break for networking. Workshops consist of taught content in the form of short lectures or screenings, with opportunity for discussion in groups and activities that explore the topics further. We may use game-based learning, simulations and role-play as part of the workshops.
2. Students are expected to read the allocated texts – or watch videos or listen to podcasts - before the classroom sessions which will build on this knowledge. There are some diagnostic questionnaires that will need to be completed ahead of certain sessions, to personalise the models being taught (eg Roger Steare’s Ethicability, or the Neris Test from 16personalities.com).
3. Students may be given mini-courses or online modules on LinkedIn learning around specific skillsets. Some of these may be given more than a week in advance of the class in which they will be used to give you time to work through and consider the information being presented.
4. We will use online platforms and professional networks such as LinkedIn as well as our VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) in Moodle for discussion and sharing of resources as well as practical activities to improve digital and online skills. You will be given tasks to complete each week to consolidate your learning, and to move you towards independence in your professional development planning. You can request feedback from the tutor on any of these tasks - some of them may be formally marked, so that you can see your own progress and understand the marking criteria.

Further Information Relating to Assessment
Formative assessment and feed-forward methods will be employed throughout this module at various points in the semester. Formative forms of assessment will include (but not exclusively): class-based activities, opportunities for draft pieces of work to be submitted for comments and feedback, drop-in sessions with the module tutor and peer-assessed (non-credit bearing) group presentations.
The summative assessment will require students to reflect and develop a self-development plan to identify and develop their leadership traits and style, as well as evaluate digital tools and platforms for communication, collaboration and networking in a way that helps their career progression.
Further specific details on the assessment (portfolio and/or work artefact(s) and critical reflective commentary) are available in the Module Handbook, with additional in-class guidance and support.
