MPM7006 - Research Project

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Demonstrate a capacity for self-management and independent learning in the investigative process, engagement with academic and industry literature, research project design and planning and management, as well as managing client relations (in case of organisation-based projects).
2 Conduct an in-depth investigation of the issue and to action selected research methodology for data collection and further analysis in an academically grounded way, as well as to handle research ethics issues associated with the project.
3 Critically evaluate research project’s findings in relation to existing academic and industry-based literature and other relevant sources.
4 Generate recommendations based on own findings in response to earlier formulated (as part of the project proposal) both business and research aims and specific objectives.
5 Produce a clear, logical and coherent project report based on the research undertaken, following specified requirements of the client (in case of organisation-based projects) and University.

Content:

The module is focused on in-depth investigation of real-life business issues, including organisation-based projects and desk-based research and analytics, and presenting it in the form of a project report, which extends project preparation done as part of the Business Research and Analytics Module (including problem definition in the light of business context/issue, potential client needs/benefits, business and research aims and objectives, literature review and research methodology). Based on the practical application of their research ideas and plans, students will focus on data collection, further analyses and evaluation, reflection on limitations, possible recommendations for business and conclusion.

The project should be conducted following Leeds Trinity’s code of research conduct and ethics, while the report should abide by academic conventions and reference practice.

It is anticipated that the research project will also build students' in-depth knowledge and understanding in core subject areas (appropriate for their programme of studies) depending on the area of their interest, as well as the practical application of methods and techniques relevant to their subject.

The challenging nature of research projects, fast changing external environment and client / research sponsor relations should be considered, analysed and mitigated as students are encouraged to enhance their own resilience capabilities in conducting their research project.

Communication and networking are the focal aspects of this module. While conducting the project, students should proactively communicate with their research project sponsors / clients and academic supervisor and manage their expectations, as well as communicate with various groups of respondents in a professional and transparent manner, fully abiding by Leeds Trinity’s research ethics code of practice.

The other key aspect of the Research Project is combining and balancing theoretical (academic) and practical / applied business requirements, by helping research sponsors / clients in responding to identified business problems / needs, achieving agreed set of research aims and objectives, which should be also evaluated in the light of academic research, as well as producing recommendations for business on the basis of original own findings.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The module is designed to support self-directed learning through enquiry and research. The module encourages deep learning through the critical analysis of relevant literature and the investigative research process. It allows application of earlier studied principles of social science research and key business, management and marketing research methodologies.

All students will receive individual support from allocated supervisors (15 hours in total). Students need to agree with their supervisors a mutually convenient schedule of work (regular, ideally 7-8 bi-weekly meetings) to receive further advice on their project, as well as formative feedback on the gradual development of their project reports.

Supervisors will be allocated based on topics selected by students and their academic areas of expertise.

Depending on the nature of the projects, locality (national/international) and practicality, both workshops/group tutorials sessions and individual supervision meetings can be conducted face-to-face or in an online mode. Online sessions are not available to students based at a UK institution.

Weekly F2F meetings should be allocated with supervisors (in case of international projects Teams – as an equivalent of F2F) to secure actionable feedback and smooth progression through the project phases. Online sessions are not available to students based at a UK institution.

Further Information Relating to Assessment

The Project Report is generated on the basis of students’ application of their research ideas and plans, and presenting their findings, associate analysis / discussion and reflection on limitations, possible recommendations for the business and conclusion, and extended reference list.

The structure of the report may vary depending on the potential research sponsors/client needs, but in principle may include the following sections: i) business context / problem definition, associated research aim and objectives ii) literature review and theoretical / investigative / analytical frameworks iii) research methodology and methods for data collection and analysis, research ethics issues iv) data analysis and discussion of findings v) conclusions and recommendations vi) references vii) appendices.

Full details, structure and requirements associated with the Project Report are described in the Module Handbook.

As a result of the University responsibility for ensuring that research conducted by its staff and research students abides by accepted standards of conduct and ethics, this aspect is integrated within the content of this course and students follow the recommendations obtained through the ethical clearance process and in line within the University’s Research and Knowledge Exchange Ethics and Integrity Policy.
