HED7003 - Principles of teaching, learning and assessment in Higher Education

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 - Critically analyse core concepts in teaching, learning and assessment design and practices
2 - Interpret and synthesise models of reflective and reflexive practice in the context of their professional role
3 - Critically analyse professional practice through engagement with relevant pedagogical theory and literature.

Content:

Participants will explore key concepts in teaching, learning and assessment as related to the current university strategy, including emerging developments in digital technologies. The relationship between these core concepts and learner outcomes will be explored. Key models of reflective and reflexive practices will be interrogated, taking account of participants’ professional roles and contexts. There will be a strong emphasis on theory-practice dialogue, enabling participants to analyse their current and future practices in relation to relevant pedagogical and andragogical theory and literature.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Participants will learn through a mix of approaches. These include lead lectures from experts in the field; some guest speakers may be used to deliver lead lectures in specific areas. These lectures will then be linked with seminar style activities to facilitate discussion and promote reflexive learning. A dialogic approach to learning will support participants to share ideas with colleagues from other sectors/backgrounds or specialisms. The module will make use of Moodle and Teams where relevant to support distance learning.
