Learning and Teaching Information:

The CYP7043 module, focused on Safeguarding and Supervision Strategies in Practice, is strategically designed to align with Leeds Trinity University's Learning, Teaching, and Academic Experience Strategy (LTAE 2022-2026). This course aims to empower students with a deep understanding and critical awareness of safeguarding practices, especially in the context of children and young people (CYP) with mental health issues. Through this module, students will develop a keen insight into the complexities of risk and vulnerability within families, with a special emphasis on those factors that affect CYP with social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs, including those with special educational needs (SEN), and vulnerabilities stemming from family environments, sexual, or economic exploitation.

The learning outcomes are structured to ensure that upon completion, students will have demonstrated a critical awareness of the key factors of risk and vulnerability affecting families; engaged with current safeguarding issues, particularly those impacting CYP with mental health concerns; identified and evaluated essential practice skills necessary for assessing and intervening in situations where children are at risk or in need of significant protection, including the importance of professional supervision; and recognized the crucial role of protective factors and resilience in the lives of CYP and their families.

The module content is rich and varied, designed to cover the broad spectrum of safeguarding needs of CYP with SEMH needs. This includes examining the impact of SEN, understanding the dynamics within vulnerable families, and addressing the critical issues of child sexual or economic exploitation. Students will have the opportunity to explore the effects of mental health needs on CYP and to assess the effectiveness of various support strategies. The module also focuses on the practice of safeguarding within various settings, aiming to evaluate and establish best practice methods in safeguarding and supervision strategies.

This comprehensive approach not only equips students with the theoretical knowledge required to understand the nuances of safeguarding but also prepares them to apply this knowledge in practical settings, ensuring they can make a significant impact in their professional endeavours.
