SOC7006 - Scholarly Project

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Identify a field of research within criminology and/or criminal justice, applying relevant tools of investigation whilst demonstrating a capacity for intellectual independence.
Analyse a variety of data-sources from a critical and reflexive perspective and with limited guidance.
Plan and conduct a self-directed piece of scholarly research, demonstrating skills of self-organisation and project management.
Complete an extended piece of scholarly work, submitting a cohesive and intellectually engaged project.

Content:

Students are required to complete a sizeable, individual piece of work on a topic of disciplinary significance. The focal points of this piece of work will be agreed between students and supervisors. If necessary, students will also make a submission to the faculty research ethics committee.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The scholarly project module requires students to draw upon their knowledge from the taught aspects of the programme, as well as any significant prior learning or experience and to apply it to an extended piece of independent work. Students are expected to self-manage the process with guidance from a supervisor. Students will receive supervision throughout the period of work through a combination of individual tutorials and online support. The module will also contain a short series of seminar/workshop sessions designed to get them started and support them through the process that will also provide opportunities for formative assessment beyond the day-to-day supervision.
