SOC6043 - Policing Priorities

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

The module aims to develop anin-depthunderstanding of policing issues in the 21st Century such as cyber crime and terrorism. The roleof intelligence agencies will be explored and their effectiveness in combattingsecurity issues,with particular reference to Britain. The module fulfils this through a critical examination ofkey aspects in the field of policing and securitystudies. It aims to provide a critical awarenessof the role of the police and other agencies such as the National Crime Agency and the British Security Service (MI5).

Further details relating to assessment
Students will have the opportunity to submit an essay plan as a formative assessment to ensure thay are approaching the case study essay appropriately and correctly. Students should identify the key theories and concepts they will be examining in their case study essay.

Case Study Essay – Students will be expected to focus on a topic of their choosing in relation to the teaching content of the module and critically examine matters of policing and security in relation to it. Students will demonstrate a critical engagement with the appropriate academic material by examining the historical, cultural and political debates surrounding their chosen case.

Individual Presentation – Students will be expected to present a critical evaluation on a topic of their choice, to be agreed on by the module leader, related to Semester 1 teaching.

Assessment:

001 Individual presentation; 20 minutes; end of semester 1 50%
002 Essay; 3,000 words; end of semester 2 50%
