SHN7093 - Contemporary Issues for Specific Populations

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Critically appraise the contemporary literature and policy in relation to health and wellbeing for a range of populations.
Justify the need for contemporary health and wellbeing interventions related to a specific population.
Design an appropriate contemporary health and wellbeing intervention related to a specific population which is theoretically underpinned.

Content:

This module includes critiquing the literature on health and wellbeing on diverse population groups, looking at specific health topics. The module also involves appraising the policies and practices across different population groups in relation to health and wellbeing. The module requires students to design and justify a contemporary intervention related to a chosen population with specific needs, using theory and a critique of literature to underpin it. Students will negotiate the chosen population group early in the module. Students will learn about intervention design processes and relevant theoretical frameworks for health and wellbeing behaviour change.

Learning and Teaching Information:

This module is delivered online. The core module content will be delivered using asynchronous online tasks and activities. Student learning will be supported through completion of interactive forums and individual and group tutorials. Contributions from academic staff with expertise in understanding the health and wellbeing needs and/or designing interventions for a range of population groups will take place in the module. Formative feedback will be provided in forums and tutorials at timepoints which align with module delivery. Summative assessment will be completed at the mid- point and at the end of the module, with feedback provided for this work.

Further details relating to assessment
Component 1: Essay
The essay will be a written piece of work critiquing health and wellbeing literature and policy and drawing on the literature to justify the need for a health and wellbeing intervention for a chosen specific population. This will inform the design and justification for the chosen intervention in the presentation component.

Component 2: Presentation
Students will be expected to design an appropriate contemporary intervention based on the critique of and justification from literature presented in the essay component. Students will outline the intervention in a 20 minutes individual oral presentation.

Students will be supported with the assessments in two 30-minute individual tutorials, one mid-semester and one end-of-semester.

Assessment:

001 Essay; 3,000 words; mid semester 2 50%
002 Presentation; 20 minutes; end of semester 2 50%
