SHN6233 - Professional Learning Through Work in PE

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

This module develops students’ employability skills by immersing them within the workplace. Core taught content includes: approaches to work-based projects, managing time on projects, skills audits, guidance and advice on negotiating project outcomes. They will negotiate and agree their approach to assessment, along with subject contextualisation.

Students will begin the module with a series of lectures which are 14 hours in total. These will introduce the module and aspects of professional practice. Discussion of professional standards in coaching and teaching will be undertaken for example and students can build a profile of their current areas of strength and of developmental need. Students will also be allocated an individual tutor and they will negotiate a project with their tutor. Each student has 3 hours of tutorial time to focus upon individual needs. The module will include a proposal in order to finalise the topic and also the method by which it will be completed. The project design must include a work based aspect of at least 80 hours so that students can apply their knowledge and develop the relevant employability skills.

This module gives students an excellent opportunity to personalise their learning experience and improve their career prospects prior to graduation. It gives students the skills to take responsibility for personal and professional development and develops the reflective practitioner.

The assessment has three components. The first is a proposal of a negotiated project which explains what the student intends to do and gives a rationale for the project. They will then carry out the negotiated project and this will require at least 80 hours time based within the workplace. This component must be passed. Finally the student will reflect upon the project as the final component.

In relation to the work-placement, a tripartite sign-off form will be required. This form will include the details of the project outline by the student, will be verified by the employer and will be signed off by the study supervisor. This should also include an agreed pattern of working hours.

The employer will also be asked to submit 3 appraisal forms (end Sem 1, mid-Feb Sem 2 and end Sem 2).
