SHN5105 - Nutrition for Sport, Health and Exercise

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

The core content in this module covers digestion, absorption and excretion, metabolism of macronutrients and energy release during exercise. Nutrient requirements for exercising populations; the nature of body composition and the principles of energy balance will be explored. The role of macronutrients and micronutrients in exercise will be evaluated with specific considerations for how the consideration of these have an effect on dietary planning. Practical laboratory sessions to explore metabolic responses to exercise will be included, as well as practical workshops to develop nutrition related skills such as the use of specialist software (Nutritics).

Further details relating to assessment
Component 1, Essay: Students will be provided with a case study for which they will need to evaluate the foods choices made. This should include discussion in relation to how the foods are digested and absorbed and their impact on metabolism and performance.

Formative feedback will be provided at the mid semester and end semester point. In addition, learning activities during the module also provide opportunity for formative feedback to support the summative assessments.
