On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Critically examine and reflect on their current experiences, knowledge, beliefs and skill sets in order to analyse academic and professional actions and processes.
Critically review key theories, methods, ideas, models and frameworks relating to specific disciplines of education, childhood studies, family support or related practice.
Synthesise research findings, professional perspectives, reflection or other evidence to inform application to, and enable effective communication with, professional contexts.
Critically engage in or reflect on debates about ethical issues raised in practical contexts and develop a clear understanding of the relationship between your own value systems and professional practice or standards and, where applicable, legislation.
This module will develop the foundations of academic knowledge and skills and of critical reflective practice across academic and professional contexts. Students will learn about theoretical underpinnings, competing frameworks and approaches, and their implications for ethical and effective practice and analysis. The module will provide a framework for individual evaluation of professional and academic action planning for personal and professional learning.
Learning will be focussed on fostering critical reflective practice. Activities will include lectures, small group discussion workshops, student presentations, seminars and independent study. Learning will be supported by module tutorials.
Students will be enabled to draw on their own professional experiences and personal contexts in order to contribute to, and lead, group activities.
Students will be expected to undertake a wide range of personal reading. Much of this will be self-sourced, with ‘starter’ readings provided through Moodle. Study skills for Level 7 will be developed in respect of focussed reading of texts, the recognition, understanding and communication of key ideas and theories, and planning direction for future learning.

This module is the foundational module of ICE masters framework. It therefore needs to be applicable and accessible by students with a range of experiences and histories. The programme team will specify a framework for a reflective assignment which will then be adapted to meet the needs of the specific programme on which the student is enrolled.
