POL6022 - Leadership in Policing

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
critically evaluate the national strategic context of policing and the role of the College of Policing within that;
analyse and evaluate the concept of policing as a profession;
evaluate and apply key principles of leadership in relation to policing;
detail how they will use such leadership skills in their career making use of appropriate theory and best professional practice.

Content:

This module will include content around the concept of policing as a profession; it will consider the bodies and policies that have supported and helped develop this professionalism; and the impact this has had on the service. The role of the College of Policing and its business in the role of professionalising the service will be considered.

This module will also consider academic models and theories of leadership, and how they translate to policing. Students will have opportunity to consider their own leadership style and develop strategies to employ the most effective leadership style for a given situation in a policing context.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Utilising the pre live post model, students will have preparation for the taught element, with a focused lecture-based input and discussion, allowing for the development and exploration of ideas. This will be followed by additional self-directed learning to enhance their initial teaching.
