PED4312 - Introduction to the Primary Curriculum (5-11) 1

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate subject and primary curriculum knowledge of English, Mathematics, Science and Computing;
Understand basic progression of pupils’ learning in the subjects studied;
Reflect on resources and approaches to teaching and learning, demonstrating understanding of how these may be applied effectively in school contexts;
Produce and appraise, with peers, learning resources appropriate to the age-range studied;
Understand theoretical principles of learning in each of the subject areas studied.

Content:

This module aims to establish students’ subject knowledge and the teaching of English, mathematics, science and computing. The module content will familiarise students with the level of subject knowledge necessary to teach key objectives across KS1 and KS2. Module content will also identify current national priorities in these key subject areas, as identified by DfE and Ofsted.

Students will be introduced to basic pedagogical theory as appropriate for each subject area. They will become familiarised with common teaching resources. Content is also informed through liaison with school partners and evaluation of a range of school policies and practices.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Taught sessions will include a variety of approaches to promote active and collaborative learning, incorporating integrative assessments and modelling of professional practices. Learning will also be supported by resources on the University’s VLE.

Further details relating to assessment
The group debate focuses on English and maths subject areas. This provides an early assessment and feedback opportunity for students at Level 4.

The essay will focus on a subject area of choice from within the module. This provides opportunity for students to explore a chosen subject area in greater depth.

Other relevant matters
This module will introduce students to the relevant subject specific and age phase curriculum knowledge requirements of the Core Content Framework (2019) and will be developed at Level 5; so that by the end of the programme students can demonstrate they have met the following Teachers’ Standards (DfE, 2012):
