MFC6003 - Professional Project

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

This module enables students to develop assessment modes that provide the flexibility for them to apply theoretical understanding and practical work based development to a chosen professional context. This could include a work based project or intervention or an alternative professional development project within their work setting. Students will be expected to negotiate a project with their employer or prior placement provider organisation that meets the needs of both the employer and Leeds Trinity University.

An initial series of seminars will outline the nature of the personal development challenge of project work within employment, project and time management and the process and management of the module. Subsequently there will be a range of tutorial support pre, peri and post placement to chart progress, support the student and employer, and aid the students towards their assessment. These will nominally be done by the student’s academic supervisor.

As a negotiated, self managed module, students will receive initial support to establish the learning outcomes and appropriate assessment methods. They will engage in online support and students will be expected to schedule further tutorials, in addition to those already provided with their academic supervisor, either face to face, online or telephone to ensure progression and the academic rigor of the project.

Further details relating to assessment
Although assessments will broadly follow the convention of a written report and standard oral presentation students will be expected to negotiate the exact format, for example Business Reports, Product/Service Development Plans, Marketing Plans/Campaigns, etc. Presentations may be directed at specific audiences, e.g. employer staff, customers, directors etc.

The first assessment is expected to be tied into Media Week, where students will focus on graduate outcomes and their relevance in the industry, this will inform their project and A2 presentation.

In relation to the work-placement, a tripartite sign-off form will be required. This form will include the details of the project outline by the student, will be verified by the employer and will be signed off by the study supervisor. This should also include an agreed pattern of working hours.

The employer will also be asked to submit 3 appraisal forms (end Sem 1, mid-Feb Sem 2 and end Sem 2).

It is intended that the term employer be flexibly used and can include (subject to all parties being agreed) research intern, business start-up, freelancing as well as other possibilities.

Workplace component is must pass.
