On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

The module focuses on the managing oneself and relationships with others. Management issues are addressed in the context of values-based organisations whether in the public, voluntary, or community sectors or social enterprises. Apprentices are introduced to management and leadership theories and relevant policy frameworks in order to facilitate critical reflection on aspects of their management and leadership role. The modules have been developed in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. In particular goal 4 (ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all) and goal 9 (build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation).
Apprentices will explore time management, leadership and communication skills, assertion, and negotiation skills. The apprentices will examine teamwork and how to build engagement in their team and develop an agile and collaborative culture of high performance.
The apprentices will discuss coaching and mentoring and how they have led and influenced people and been able to build constructive and trustful teams who are confident to take risks when appropriate and who are able to respond to and provide constructive feedback and challenge.
The apprentices will assess their own personal development and analyse how they provide development opportunities for their team. They will discuss their own approaches to accountability and responsibility for driving continuous improvement and how they establish an open, high performing working environment.
The apprentices will assess examples of coaching and mentoring techniques that they have implemented to improve the success of an individual or team which led to a positive change. An analysis of the role of the leader and managerial effectiveness, managing/leading across organisational boundaries objective setting, time management, schools of thought regarding leadership and management and organisations will be analysed along with management learning and development: learning styles and cycles, reflective practice, management development, management and leadership styles and personal development plans.
The module will discuss behaviour and why people behave as they do, theories of motivation and their implication for managers, organising work of others, types and use of power and influence, leadership and management and leadership styles. Managing performance:
effective working in multi-disciplinary, multi-agency groups and teams, team roles, performance management, setting objectives, feedback, formal appraisal, approaches to training and development and dealing with poor performance with also be examined. Apprentices will assess how to choose a team and managing conflict.

The sessions will be organised in 3 8-hour teaching blocks. Lectures will deliver core theoretical frameworks, followed by tutorials and personal exercises for reflection and development. Tutorials will be designed to support learners to be self-directed in additional research and with particular emphasis on research within their own employing organisation.
The module will present students with selected scenarios for basic analysis in order to develop both analytical competence and the ability to identify and apply appropriate techniques in a range of typical situations.
The module will make use of case studies and developing business trends and so the nature of the topics and exercises will vary. Students will be provided with, and/or directed to, relevant reading and additional questions/ exercises to support their progress through the module material

Students will be offered formative feedback throughout the module in order to help them to achieve successful coverage of the apprenticeship standard’s KSBs in conjunction with the modules aims and outcomes. This will be done via formal sessions and also via online interactions on the Moodle platform and the use of tools such as email and Microsoft Teams.
