MBE7042 - Driving Change and Risk Management

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to: Critically assess approaches to shaping organisational mission, culture and values. Critically examine theories and models of innovation and how they can impact on organisational success. Investigate and assess the value of your own organisation’s innovation practices. Critically evaluate organisational approaches in the pursuit of new enterprise and opportunities Critically assess the processes which organisations may employ to assist them to make decisions in risky environments Critically examine some of the following types of risk: credit, market, operational, reputational and regulatory Critically analyse, synthesise and evaluate approaches to change management and take a reasoned selection of an approach to change management explaining how these are appropriate to your work context. Critically assess strategies for contingency planning and developing organisational resilience.

Content:

his module covers change, innovation and risk management within organisations. Apprentices will begin the module by critically reviewing their organisation’s vision, mission values and culture. Change management will be discussed in relation to innovation and sustainability. Other topics will include decision making, use of big data in decision making and risk management. The modules have been developed in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. In particular goal 4 (ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all) and goal 9 (build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation).

The module covers a wide-ranging set of business leadership disciplines and specifically innovation, change, enterprise and risk management. Consideration will be given to a range of models suitable for leading innovation, change, enterprise and risk management including the RMI (radical, mixed and incremental) approaches to innovation; Kotter’s eight steps to change, Lewin’s unfreeze/change/re-freeze model, the change curve, Kaizen, Business Process Re-engineering, Stakeholder Mapping and SAF (Suitability, Acceptability, Feasibility) modelling.

This module is designed to assess the external context in which organisation’s operate. It explores the political, economic, sociocultural, technological, ethical and market influences on organisations. It examines how organisations respond to their external environment through change and innovation, strategic management, operations and business development. The module focusses on entrepreneurialism and decision-making in risky environments, which is of particular importance to industry in the current global environment.

The module is designed to introduce learners to theoretical models and concepts such as risk management, crisis management and organisational resilience. It will explore the importance of decision making and how enterprise can be employed within an organisation. The learners will examine risk and decision making in relation to regulatory environments, legal, health and safety and well-being and compliance, corporate social responsibility, environmental impact and cyber security. Learners will gain an understanding of competitive strategies and entrepreneurialism, approaches to effective decision making, and the use of big data and insight to implement and manage change. The learners will be introduced to the concept of organisational resilience and how and when to support new enterprise.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The sessions will be organised in 3 8-hour teaching blocks. Lectures will deliver core theoretical frameworks, followed by tutorials and personal exercises for reflection and development. Tutorials will be designed to support learners to be self-directed in additional research and with particular emphasis on research within their own employing organisation. The module will present apprentices with selected scenarios for basic analysis in order to develop both analytical competence and the ability to identify and apply appropriate techniques in a range of typical situations. It will make use of case studies and developing business trends and so the nature of the topics and exercises will vary. Apprentices will be provided with, and/or directed to, relevant reading and additional questions/ exercises to support their progress through the module material. Typically delivered on a blended learning basis with a combination of workshops and on-line support the learning and teaching will include a range of methods such as lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials, with emphasis on real life work experience and both team and peer support. Apprentices may be expected to draw on a range of theoretical/academic, personal and work-based resources. Course documentation, support materials and web-based materials will be available on the VLE as appropriate. Implementation of study skills will be supported and in particular teamwork, and the capacity to develop written argument will be developed. During the course of sessions, and subsequently through the contractual apprenticeship progress reviews there will be opportunities for tutor/learner interaction to meet individual needs and to help develop skills, confidence, competence, knowledge and understanding relating to the aims and objectives of the module and more widely meeting the overall Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours (KSBs) of the Senior Leader apprenticeship standard. Accessing library resources and help with coursework study skills will be available from services across the University. Apprentices would be expected to prepare for the sessions by reading set texts and completion of tasks set in class or via the VLE and will be expected to take part in a wide range of learning activities. Apprentices will maintain their Personal e-portfolio during this module and on-going self-evaluation will be part of the apprentices’ identification of needs.

Further details relating to assessment
Students will be offered formative feedback throughout the module in order to help them to achieve successful coverage of the apprenticeship standard’s KSBs in conjunction with the modules aims and outcomes. This will be done via formal sessions and also via online interactions on the Moodle platform and the use of tools such as email and Microsoft Teams.
