Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the main principles of English Law affecting the area.
Apply key areas of the law to practical journalistic scenarios and demonstrate understanding of safe news practice.

Content:

This module focuses on vital knowledge of the legal system including court reporting, regulatory codes and media law disciplines.

Students will learn key areas of media law including; defamation, contempt of court, reporting restrictions, defenses, copyright, hate crime, juvenile crime and sex offences and privacy.

Case studies for each discipline will be highlighted.

This module offers a sound knowledge and understanding of law and regulation (IPSO, Ofcom & IMPRESS) with particular focus on industry disciplines and best practice whilst working as a Journalist.

Students will undertake a visit to court in order to produce a story for their portfolio.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The module is delivered via a series of seminars and workshops as part of a blended learning process, and learners will be expected to attend and participate in these.

Independent learning is integral throughout the module and there are set tasks and/or detailed directed reading each week.

Further details relating to assessment
The Exam is set and administered internally as a closed book exam for first attempt and an open book exam for resit attempt, with the latter using McNae’s reference text, which students may bring into the exam. The method of submission is via Moodle.

The portfolio must include a story based on a court visit done by the student. The medium may be chosen by the student in negotiation with the tutor – for example, it may be done as a piece to camera. The regulation test will cover Ofcom and IPSO.

For accreditation reasons, students must pass all components and the module as a whole in order to progress.
