Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.
This module enables students to retain an element of work-based learning in their final year programme, by:
1.Spending time working with an employer during the year, focussing on completing a specific project for the employer, related to their subject, and reflecting on what they have learned from this experience, OR
2. Developing a chosen employability skill through independent learning (e.g. LinkedIn Learning, relevant professional training, completing a professional certification) and producing a project in relation to that skills development, OR
3. Combining elements of 1 and 2 above.
Employability and professional development will be supported by group taught sessions (at least 4 sessions in semester 1 and 3 sessions in semester 2, amounting to a total of 14 hours of group sessions). These will cover approaches to work-based projects, managing time on projects, skills audits, guidance and advice on negotiating project outcomes and negotiating and agreeing their approach to assessment, along with subject contextualisation and reflective practice. Visiting speakers relating to employment aspects of the study of English and Creative Writing will also be included (e.g. publishers, writers, writing business owners).
Students will also be supported individually through 6 x 30 minute individual tutorials with their academic supervisor.

Further details relating to assessment
Assessment 1: Project Outline
The assignment will include a project outline, a reflective outline of the student’s approach, and intended outcomes of the project or training. This assignment will form the basis of the Tripartite Sign-off Form verified by employer and signed off by tutor, including the agreed pattern of working hours.
Assessment 2: Placement and/or Training Project
The pass/fail mark will be on the basis of feedback from employer and academic supervisor, including 3 x employer appraisal forms (to be received end Sem 1; mid-Feb Sem 2 and end of Sem 2).
Assessment 3: Final Project Report and Reflections after completion of the project.
This would normally be a written report, including an outline of the employer and of the placement undertaken, with reflections on achievements, challenges, problems and skills acquired, as well as reflection on lessons learned for the future. It should be academic and scholarly, with reference made to appropriate secondary sources. In consultation with the tutor, an alternative form of negotiated assessment may be offered.
In relation to the work-placement, a tripartite sign-off form will be required. This form will include the details of the project outline by the student, will be verified by the employer and will be signed off by the study supervisor. This should also include an agreed pattern of working hours.
The employer will also be asked to submit 3 appraisal forms (end Sem 1, mid-Feb Sem 2 and end Sem 2).
Placement and/or Training Project must be passed in line with University regulations.
