Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.
This module introduces students to the study of language, gender and sexuality. In a first step, students will familiarise themselves with key theories and approaches in this field of study. They will develop a critical mindset allowing them to evaluate at times conflicting theories. The module then examines applications of this field of study in various areas such as education and the media. Throughout the module, students will work closely with authentic linguistic data and they will take an informed and critical stance towards current issues

Further details relating to assessment
The first assignment is due at the end of Semester 1. It is a 3,000-word equivalent set of blog posts that identify and discuss societal issues and debates pertaining to language, gender and sexuality by drawing on research in this field.
The second assignment is due at the end of Semester 2. It is a 3,000-word data analysis of some chosen discourse data, exploring the role of language in matters pertaining to gender and sexuality and drawing on research in this field.
Formal assessment will be preceded by some formative exercises (e.g. practice analysis, referencing exercise, brief report on a research task) and an ‘assessment unpacking’ session.
