On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of a range of SEND and the links to why this cohort of children and young people are most likely to experience a dual diagnosis of Mental Health conditions, including risks andearlyindicators of need.
Engagecriticallywitha range of factors which impact on the development of SEMH needs in children and young peoplewithSEND.
Evaluateand reviewcriticallya range of responses to supportingchildren and young people with SEND who also haveSEMH needs across a provision or setting.
Analyse the impact of SEMH needs upon the lives of children and young peoplewith SEND includingtheir families, critically considering a range of support and services tomeet these needs.
This module will focus on developing practicewith children and young people who have a special educational need or disability using evidence-based strategies linked to their SEMH needs. This will include investigating different SEN including those of children with Autism, ADHD, ConductDisorder,and Attachment, Trauma andNeglect andspecific learning difficultiesand the impact these may have on their SEMH.
Identification, assessment and intervention linked SEMHneedswillbe examined in practice. This particular module will be focused on thestrategies and practice linked to each area or type of need in SEND with regards to Mental Health.
Studies suggest that children suffering from mental illness and disabilities are more likely to have SEND.This module will explore this inter-relationshipand the types of responses, support and interventions available including the need to be aware of safeguarding issues with children with a SEND.
There will be a mix of lead lectures, visiting speakers, and problem-based case work and workshop sessions to secure the learning outcomes. These methods will take account of the teaching and assessment strategy of the University. They will be supported by students being able to take individual tutorial support as and when it is needed.
There will be a focus of active collaborative groupwork, enquiry-based learning and problem-based learning linked to case study development.

There will be a high level of personalisation in terms of negotiated tasks within both parts of the assessment.
Throughout, students will adhere to academic convention and show evidence of reading and critical evaluation of sources and debates within social emotional and mental health discipline.
