On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate advanced knowledge and understand needed to accurately identify speech, language and communication differences and needs in children and young people within an educational setting and to analyse the impact of these needs on the children and young people’s social, emotional and educational outcomes.
Demonstrate advanced skills, expertise and capabilities needed to assess speech, language and communication differences and needs in children and young people at universal and targeted levels.
Evaluate and respond critically to research findings and evidence-based practice in identifying and assessing speech, language, and communication differences and needs in children and young people.
Interpret and effectively communicate the identification and impact of speech, language and communication differences and needs in children and young people with a range of stakeholders in a professional capacity.
This module will develop knowledge and understanding of identification and assessment of a range of speech, language and communication differences and needs in children from early years to further education. The knowledge and understanding of the impact that these speech, language, and communication differences have on children and young people’s social, emotional and educational outcomes will also be developed. A range of screening and informal assessment approaches will be introduced which is age appropriate. The students will develop critical thinking skills and reflective practice in using these tools and evaluating the advantages and limitations of such tools in practice. This module will develop skills in identifying when to make a referral onto specialist services (i.e., Speech and Language Therapy, Specialist Teachers) and how to complete a good quality referral. Students will examine case study evidence of the impact that speech, language and communication needs have on children and young people’s social, emotional and educational outcomes Students will also develop skills and capabilities in communicating identified needs and impacts on the children and young people’s long-term outcomes, with a range of stakeholders in a professional capacity in their setting.
Students will be taught through a combination of lectures, workshops, tutorials and guided independent study. A significant amount of learning will take place in the work-based setting of the student and therefore the work produced for assessment will be linked to the work-based practice of this role. There will be personalisation of portfolio tasks to allow for co-construction.

Case studies of children/ young people’s speech, language and communication profiles and the impact of these from practice.
