CYP6013 - Sociological, Philosophical and Historical Perspectives of Childhood

Objectives:

Assessment tasks are designed to enable students to demonstrate the Learning and Employability outcomes for the relevant level of study. Level Learning Outcomes are embedded in the assessment task(s) at that level. This enables a more integrated view of overall student performance at each level.

Content:

This module will give students the opportunity to explore how the meaning of childhood has changed over the generations. Social justice, cultural influences and ethics will form an integral part of this module. Students will compare constructions of childhood and examine theories of childhood from a range of academic disciplines: sociological, philosophical and historical. Students will explore some of the most challenging and fundamental issues concerning children and their families in the twenty-first century and will develop an understanding of children’s lived experiences from a historical and global perspectives. The ever-changing policies and ideologies that surround the lives of children and their families will be examined, as will contemporary research in the context of a global children’s agenda.

COMPONENT 1 - small group presentation and timeline display - small group work (student led – they decide and self manage their own group) the timeline assessment will be a visual display to be presented on the same day as the presentation - the presentation will be circa 15 – 20 minutes. The students will be supported throughout Semester 1 as they prepare for this assessment which will occur towards the beginning of Semester 2.
COMPONENT 2 – negotiated assessment - will be an individual task where the student provides a critical analysis of major challenges facing children in the twenty first century – this will be negotiated between the student and tutor and could be: essay, report, presentation, production of a resource or film.

Formative assessment will be integrated into sessions and further information is included in the Module Handbook.
